Big miners drag stocks down
On the Sydney Futures Exchange, the December share price index contract was down 72 points to 6528, on a volume of 19,549 contracts. CMC Markets dealer Matt Wacher said lower base metal prices overnight are weighing on the local bourse. "Most of the sectors seem to be pretty flat. Energy and materials sectors are off," Mr Wacher said. "I guess the materials and energy sectors are off on the back of the commodity prices overnight. Oil prices and all the base metals took a bit of a beating and similarly with the gold price which was off quite substantially." Mr Wacher said positive retail sales data in the United States helped to buoy stocks on Wall Street."The US retail sales result was pretty strong so that's probably given a bit of impetus to the market as a whole over there. "It started much lower on the day and ended up around 40 points on the close...
Australian share market falls on US recession fears
At the close, the benchmark S&P/ASX200 index was down 62.5 points at 6290.7, while the All Ordinaries lost 61.5 points to 6372.6. At 4.15pm (AEDT) on the Sydney Futures Exchange, the March share price index contract was 20 points lower at 6312, on a volume of 18,706 contracts. Macquarie Equities client advisor David Halliday said the local bourse was starting to factor in the possibility of a recession in the US. "The higher oil price and economic data is certainly making more people think about the prospect of a recession in the US, and if that is the case, it is bad news for equity markets around the world,'' Mr Halliday said. "Our market started to factor in the prospect of a recession a little bit more today and that's why we've seen the big falls.'' On Wall Street overnight, the Dow Jones industrial average fell 220.86 points to close at 13,043.96.
Oil markets breach $100 a barrel for first time
Investors in oil futures drove prices above $100 a barrel today at market close, marking the first time crude has ever closed at three figures. Analysts hypothesized investor fears about a possible OPEC production cut next month, concern over Alon USA's Big Spring oil refinery explosion Monday, which injured four and put the plant out of commission for at least two months, and the heightened political tensions between the United States and Venezuela. Aggregate data from MSN Autos placed the average price per gallon at Dallas pumps at $2.92 on Tuesday afternoon. The national average price per gallon is $3.03. .

Kern’s past helped fuel new film
In the early days, oil drillers worked around open pits, said Bob Foreman, a volunteer for the West Kern Oil Museum. You never knew when you might hit a dangerous pocket of gas that could lead to the kind of explosion immortalized in the film. They had so many wells blowing oil, going over the derricks, he said. They had no way to control the derricks. The gas would blow until it exhausted itself. A great giant pocket ... They couldnt shut it off. Crude equipment also put oil field workers in constant danger, Nickell said. When working at night on the wooden derricks, they fired up yeller dogs, lanterns that resemble a tea kettle with two spouts. Its a wonder everything didnt burn down, Nickell added. Taft was born around 1910, when the railroad began to unload Oregonian lumber for the derricks, Foreman said.
Murder trial witnesses fail to appear
The crimes were committed, according to the charge sheet, from late 2005 through 2006. The two men are linked to the Mahdi Army militia of radical Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, whose political movement at the time had been put in charge of the health ministry. .
Rip-off web ticket touts face clampdown
The Observer newspaper said that the Culture, Media and Sport select committee will claim next month that web-based black market ticket agencies collaborate with rings of touts who obtain large numbers of seats then sell them online. It will accuse eBay and similar 'secondary ticket agents' such as Viagogo and Seatwave of making huge profits by exploiting fans' readiness to pay over the odds for sold-out events. Earlier this month, This is Money launched its Ticketing Rip-off campaign, with an exclusive interview with top promoter Harvey Goldsmith. In it, he slammed the sites, such Viagogo and Seatwave - which have been explicitly set up to facilitate the online trading of tickets to music, theatre and sporting events - as parasitically exploiting both consumers and artists.
