Face/Off : Two-Disc Special Edition (DVD)

Nicolas Cage is one the most interesting actors working in cinema today. Hes got the cojones to appear in something as controversial as World Trade Center. Hes as comfortable playing misfits in arthouse films (Leaving Las Vegas) as he is playing Arnie-lite action heroes in Bruckheimer shoot-em-ups (Con Air). Hes perfect in a sweet comedy (It Could Happen to You) and a gritty thriller (Kiss of Death). Hes done the good (Adaptation) the bad (Next) and everything in between.

Face/Off is one from the testosterone-sozzled side of Cages CV, but even that description doesnt do the film justice. The charm, smarts, visual style and personality are all given some very sharp and shiny edges by the faultless cinematic eye of John Woo.

The pairing of Cage and Travolta is a dream, both of them oozing so much charisma they not only must have had a great time making the film, its almost a romantic comedy for all the electricity they generate.

Father Foley Cape Cod abuse case settled For $550,000

The Archdiocese of Hartford agreed this week to pay $550,000 to a man who accused the Rev. Stephen Foley of using his position as Hartford County fire chaplain to sodomize him when he was a 14-year-old parishioner in Windsor Locks. Foley, who has been accused of abuse by at least 11 men since 1993 and was removed from public ministry in 2002, is still affiliated with the county fire organization he belonged to when the alleged assault occurred. He now holds the title of "chaplain emeritus" of the group, according to board members... The current president of the group is Windsor Locks Fire Chief Gary Ruggiero. Haber said Ruggiero sent an e-mail to the board of directors Friday criticizing the newspaper for publishing a story last Sunday that exposed Foley's continued use of a police-equipped Crown Victoria with flashing lights, sirens and scanners... abuse took place on a weekend when the boy and his friend accompanied Foley to a home on Cape Cod, which Foley said was owned by his aunt, the brief said.

Soft miners, banks keep lid on stocks

THE Australian stock market was little changed at noon amid subdued trading, although the big miners were weaker after base metals prices came under pressure again.

The benchmark S&P/ASX200 index was 0.4 points higher at 6334.7, while the All Ordinaries had gained 1.1 points to 6396.2. On the Sydney Futures Exchange, the December share price index contract was seven points lower at 6364 on a volume of 5,580 contracts. Austock Securities senior client adviser Michael Heffernan said the market lacked firm direction. "It's been a bit choppy, which is not surprising given the fact that is no lead from our normal leader, which is the US," Mr Heffernan said. "Commodity prices were a bit on the soft side.' "It is interesting that the major drivers of our market, the banks and financial sectors, are in negative territory." Following a round of profit-taking in the past couple of sessions, it could be time for investors to buy again, Mr Heffernan said.

Boulder: Impeach Bush?

Boulder's elected leaders are expected to decide next week whether to draft and vote on a resolution calling for the impeachment of President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney.

For the past few weeks, activists have been showing up at Boulder City Council meetings, carrying signs, handing out "impeach" pins and asking City Council members to take up such a resolution. Similar measures have passed in cities across the country, including Detroit and Telluride.

Liz Robinson, one of the organizers of the effort, said people hoping to see impeachment proceedings have given congressional Democrats — who won a majority in the fall of 2006 — plenty of time to act.

But since they haven't, she said, locally elected officials should take up the slack.

"Whether or not it's the city's business directly, like potholes, I feel this affects all of us," she said.
