Warming to Athens in winter

On Sundays the city's famous flea market spreads this far, where it becomes less of a tourist hotspot and more of a local affair. There are some genuine bargains among the junk and bric-à-brac, but the main appeal is the ambience, with ancient men flogging everything from antiques to knocked-off Rolexes in an atmosphere not unlike an eastern bazaar.

In winter the two-mile pedestrianised ancient promenade that links all of the city's principal archaeological sites becomes an exercise circuit for Athenians, filled with families, dog-walkers, joggers and hand-holding couples. The ancient sites themselves are blissfully free of crowds. Wandering around an Acropolis devoid of noisy visitors, or through the somnolent peace of the ancient cemetery of Keramikos by yourself, is an absolute joy.

Clintons ghettoize Obama

It began in Iowa, where Barack Obama, the first black crossover candidate with broad appeal to all racial and ethnic groups, was on fire in a state that was overwhelmingly white.

Came then Billy Shaheen, the Clinton New Hampshire co-chairman, to suggest that, were Obama to be nominated, Republicans would ask when he had stopped using drugs and whether he ever bought or sold drugs. Mark Penn of the Clinton campaign denied on MSNBC’s "Hardball" that his team was raising the "cocaine issue."

Mission accomplished, Shaheen dutifully resigned. Bill Clinton drove the point home, telling an interviewer that to nominate Obama would be a "roll of the dice."

Nevertheless, Obama won Iowa going away and stormed into New Hampshire for what pundits predicted would be a defeat for Hillary so crushing it would be the final chapter of the Clinton era.

Cap Times election blog: Middleton turnout lower than expected

The pumpkin Michael Quieto wintered over from one of the last Farmers' Markets this fall made it into the pumpkin oatmeal cookies the lead poll worker served to voters waiting in line this morning at the Olbrich Gardens polling station on Madison's east side.

"I made five dozen," said Quieto, explaining how he managed to feed voters and poll workers alike.

People had about a 20-minute wait to vote if they were at Olbrich between 7 a.m. and 9:30 a.m., Quieto said. Other than serving cookies, Quieto also helped register people in line during this time to keep the line moving. By 11 a.m., the waiting time was down to 10 minutes.

Even before the polls opened at 7 a.m., 20 people were waiting in line outside Olbrich, Quieto said. The first woman in line was there because she, well, wanted to be the first person to vote, Quieto said.
