Dollar firmer on US rate cut hopes
THE dollar closed firmer today, but struggled to sail above $US0.8900, as record low US new home sales data boosted expectations of another American interest rate cut. At 5pm AEDT, the dollar was trading at $US0.8880/84, up from Friday's close of 0.8837/43, but only a touch up from its opening of 0.8880. During today's session, the domestic currency traded between a low of $US0.8863 and a high of 0.8896. ANZ market strategist Sally Auld said the local unit gained a modest boost today from growing expectations the US would cut interest rates again as the Reserve Bank of Australia contemplated raising its rates. "It just reinforces the story that support for the Australian dollar will be the interest rate differential," she said. "Here in Australia, we have seen nasty inflation shore up expectations of another rate rise." Expectations for another US interest rate easing firmed today after American new home sales in the year to December were reported to have fallen to their worst level since records began in 1963.
Can a shiny lip gloss slim your hips?
It's playing with nutritional science in a "girly kind of way," he says. The fruit-flavored lip gloss may taste yummy, but don't expect to get skinny hips from shiny lips, experts say. "There's no magic bullet in any of the ingredients, says Joy Bauer, TODAY's nutrition expert and author of "Food Cures" (Rodale, 2007). "If dieting were as easy as putting on lip gloss or downing a drink, we would not be dealing with such an obesity problem, and everybody would be a size 2." Oreos could blow the benefit Bauer notes that there's no hard evidence linking these products to weight loss, although Coke and Nestlé, which market the diet green-tea drink Enviga, tout their small 2007 study. In a three-day study with 31 healthy men and women, the companies found that Enviga drinkers burned 106 more calories than participants who drank a plain beverage.

Bush Admits Economy Faces Challenges
We cannot take growth for granted," Mr. Bush said in a speech to a group of business leaders in which he acknowledged that "recent economic indicators have become increasingly mixed." But even after a government report on Friday that showed unemployment jumped to 5 percent last month from 4.7 percent in November, Mr. Bush stopped short of warning that the nation may be about to enter a recession. Democrats in Congress and on the campaign trail echoed the president's sobering view. With a number of analysts now predicting that an economic downturn could be imminent, both Mr. Bush and Congressional Democratic leaders say they are considering whether a rescue package is necessary to counter the threat of a recession, in which economic activity declines and joblessness increases over an extended period of time.

Long road to a livelihood
At first they drove the hour-and-15-minute commute on their own. Then they formed loose car pools to share the burden of the drive and tolls. Eventually some of them decided that even the car pool was too much. And that's where Ben Harvin stepped in. Harvin has worked at GM for 39 years, starting on Broening Highway's assembly line in 1969. When the plant closed, he bought a van (GMC, of course), thinking that he might become a private transportation provider. But the offer to transfer to Delaware came. He took the transfer and figured he might as well take a few friends with him. Now, Harvin and six to eight passengers, depending on the day, meet at the White Marsh Park and Ride at 12:45 p.m. and ride together to Newport. When their shift ends at 10:30 p.m., they climb into the van and head home.
