Iran's refinery problem reflects global fuel shortage

The Islamic Republic produces 44 million litres of refined fuel a day which provides less than half of domestic requirements. It is a vulnerability that Washington has indicated it will use as a lever in its efforts to curb Iran's nuclear programme. Fuel rationingIran finally chose to impose full fuel rationing at the end of June. Private motorists are now allowed to purchase just 100 litres a month. The sudden move allowed no time for hoarding and there has been anger on the streets at the rationing decision, with high inflation already affecting the price of basic commodities, even though Iranian petrol is still sold at about one fifth its economic cost at 11 US cents a litre. The move is scheduled to last up to six months. Iran had faced exhausting its annual budget for gasoline products by the beginning of August.

Candidates push ahead as money dwindles

I don't trust Obama, I think he's not what he's trying to appear to be. The Clinton's have their faults but I'm voting for Hillary because she has so much experience, she truly cares about the middle and lower class (how I hate that saying) AND I think she is the best person to get the economic situation under control and FINALLY get us all the health care we deserve. I cannot understand how the greatest (self proclaimed) country on earth cannot provide health care for its citizens. I think we should all be screaming from the sidewalks demanding health care now!! It's the number one cause of bankruptcy in the USA how unfair that looking after your health or the health of your loved ones could cost you your life savings. Kennendy endorsing Obama was actually a favor to Hillary ha ha. I can't stand that fat old blow hard.

GM plan lifts stock price

Stock in the 100-year-old automaker rose on the announcement by GM's top executives that the company plans to extend buyout and retirement offers to 46,000 workers who are eligible to retire in February. GM is expected to offer packages to its entire workforce at some point.

Wagoner also acknowledged that a worse-than-expected U.S. automotive market could prompt further plant closings in North America.

While some analysts expressed concern that GM continues to hold too rosy a view of the 2008 market, the reaction was much more positive than at the beginning of GM's current restructuring plan in 2005, when there was widespread concern that the automaker wouldn't last to see its centennial.

Instead, even those analysts who say GM should be cutting faster, more or sooner say the automaker appears now to be in a sustainable position, thanks to continuing restructuring plans in North America and Europe and plans for growth in emerging markets.

Country profile: Croatia

It has rumbling disputes with Slovenia over sea and land borders dating back to the break-up of Yugoslavia and the construction of a controversial coastal bridge that will allow motorists to skirt Bosnian territory has drawn criticism from Bosnia.

A country of striking natural beauty with a stunning Adriatic coastline, Croatia is again very popular as a tourist destination.
